Cape Thomas Vineyards are located in the Mount Benson Wine Region, thirteen kilometres north of Robe and adjacent to the main Kingston-Robe Highway.
Set high in the Waterhouse Range they provide commanding views over Guichen Bay and Cape Thomas, which inspired the name.
The enterprise is owned and operated by the Andrews family (Peter, Maureen, Tom, who have been farming in the district for 60 years.
Peter Andrews, as the Vineyard Manager, has been the driving force behind the development of the vineyard.
As a student at Roseworthy Agricultural College in the early 1960’s, he developed a keen interest in viticulture (and of course its products!)
With the planting of the first section of the vineyard in 1995, he finally fulfilled his long held ambition to diversify his farming operation, traditionally producing wool and prime lambs, to include viticulture.
He has been assisted by his sons Tom, in charge of vineyard operations, and George with technical support.
Fourteen hectares are now planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. The first vintage was in 1999.
Cape Thomas Wines commenced producing wine for bottling under their own label in 2004. Their first release was in August 2006.
On August 27th 2006, in association with Guichen Bay Vineyards, Cape Thomas Wines commenced trading from the Cellar Door at the Mount Benson Wine and Tourism Centre.
The Cellar Door provided an opportunity for the public to taste our wines and established our reputation for producing a range of high quality wines with broad appeal.
Cellar Door favourites were our award winning Sauvignon Blanc – the current vintage 2014 having won a gold medal at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show and our wonderful spicy silver medal Reserve Shiraz ” The Matthew”.
The Cellar Door closed in 2013 but wines our still available through direct sales and at local restaurant and sales outlets.
The family intends to remain a boutique producer of quality wines which reflect the distinctive style of grapes produced in the Mount Benson Wine Region, to work closely and collaboratively with their wine makers, and to market the wines personally.
The wines are family grown,boutique made and personally sold.
